The Young Workers Committee for the IAM Grand Lodge Convention came together to discuss how the union can involve and support young members to create lifelong union activists.
“Our committee expressed concern over the lack of progress towards 2016 & 2022’s Young Worker recommendations–a clear sign we need to recommit to meaningfully engaging young workers within our union,” said the Committee.
Jonathan Ortiz of IAM Air Transport Territory Local 1776 chaired the committee and Melissa Demyan of IAM Western Territory Local 289 was named Secretary.
The Committee identified barriers and deliberated extensively about how to welcome and engage with new and young members.
With the full support of IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen and IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli, they developed recommendations for how the union can create space for young workers and lift their vital perspective.
They reaffirmed the 2022 Convention’s committee report and recommended, among other things, that the IAM organize a Young Workers Conference developed with the input of young workers, invest in the Committee on the Future’s recommendation for Internal Organizing, and create a mentorship program.
“The path forward requires that we not only listen to young workers but actively involve them in shaping the future of our union. It’s time to commit to these efforts so that our union remains strong and vibrant for generations to come,” said the Committee.
The Committee delivered its report to the 2024 IAM Convention delegation which voted to adopt the report with its recommendations.
