In a powerful and moving message delivered at the IAM 41st Grand Lodge Convention, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) showcased his support for labor rights and the advancement of working families across the country. Addressing the IAM delegates, Jeffries reaffirmed his commitment to the forward momentum of policies aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of the working class.
“I’m proud of the fact that I grew up in a union household,” said Jeffries. “When you work hard and play by the rules, you should be able to earn a living wage, and provide a comfortable living for yourself and for your family.”
At a time when working families are navigating the complexities of economic recovery in a post-COVID-19 landscape, Jeffries’ pledge to champion economic stability and worker protections has never been more vital. His long-standing advocacy for social and economic justice, coupled with a relentless pursuit of workers’ rights, places him as a pivotal figure in the ongoing struggle for labor equity.
In November 2022, this dedication was further acknowledged by his colleagues, as he was unanimously elected to serve as the highest-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I’m thankful that as House Democrats, we’ve had the opportunity to partner with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris,” said Jeffries. “We haven’t just talked the talk. Together, we walked the walk. When you look at what we were able to accomplish in the last Congress, when we had the ability to govern together with all of you, we consistently got things done for everyday Americans, for organized labor, for the middle class, for those who aspire to be part of the middle class.”
During his speech, Jeffries emphasized the need to continue advocating for pro-worker legislation, highlighting the essential role that organized labor plays in building a fair and thriving economy. His words resonated deeply with the convention’s delegates, igniting a renewed commitment to the cause of labor rights and workers’ well-being.
“What this union does in such an incredible way, is a clear recognition that when America’s unions are strong, the United States of America is strong,” said Jeffries.
